As a former cycling enthusiast who transitioned into triathlon, Jakob always felt most at home on the bike. Running, however, told a different story. It wasn’t a lack of motivation holding him back, but a pattern of recurring injuries. Every time he tried to build his running volume, the same issue came back: Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS). Frustrating, especially because the ambition to improve never faded.
In the lead up to the Marathon of Rome, Jakob decided to approach things differently. Over five months, he trained with OnTracx, not by doing more, but by training smarter. His weekly running volume remained relatively low, averaging around 18 km, while he complemented it with strength training, swimming, and cycling. For the first time, he started to truly understand his limits.
“The warnings from OnTracx, when my load was getting too high, really helped me understand and respect my boundaries.”
Instead of constantly pushing forward, Jakob focused on recovery and balance. He gave himself three to four days of recovery between runs and only once, during a 30 km long run, did he consciously go beyond the advised weekly impact.
Looking back, that combination of listening to his body and relying on objective data made all the difference. It allowed him to stay injury free throughout the entire preparation, something he hadn’t experienced before.

He also discovered the importance of training with intention. Rather than simply increasing mileage, Jakob focused on the sessions that mattered most, like uphill treadmill workouts and race pace efforts on the track.
“The data confirmed what I felt: those sessions had by far the highest return on investment.”
Compared to the year before, he ran fewer kilometers, but with more purpose and at the right moments. The result was a breakthrough: a finish time of 2:59 in Rome, improving his personal best by 21 minutes, exactly one year after his first marathon.
In the end, what stood out most to Jakob wasn’t a quick fix, but a shift in how he approached training. With better insights and clearer guidance, he felt more in control than ever before.
“Not a miracle solution, but the right insights to train more intelligently. I'm a big fan.”
